A raw, sweet, ooey-gooey raw caramel apple that is yummy and so easy to make!
Do you remember making caramel apples as a kid? I always wanted to but never got the chance. It was just my dad and I growing up and even though he was a great dad we never got the chance to be creative like this. But he did make me carrot juice 🙂 So when I had my own children I jumped at the opportunity to get the family together and make seasonal treats! And now that I have a grandbaby, I get to do it all over again, but this time I get to show her how to make treats using wholesome, natural ingredients!
Okay, shall we let the fun begin…?
Let’s go apple picking! Check with a family member or neighbour to see if you can pick a few apples from their apple tree. I love doing it this way instead of buying the apples from the store because it’s an opportunity for the family to bond and make memories. So don’t forget your camera!
Now find some sticks. You can either cut these from the tree or find them on the ground, just make sure to sanitize them before eating off of them. If you don’t want to go through the trouble, regular popsicle sticks will do!
Next, make the raw caramel. I love using raw date paste because it’s a healthy natural sugar that is high in fiber and minerals. The caramel spread you buy at the store is made with corn syrup, which has no nutritional value whatsoever.
After your apples and sticks are all cleaned, go ahead and take the sharper end of the stick and push it through the middle of the apple until it feels secure. Now lets start spreading the ooey-gooey paste onto the apples! After you have applied the date spread you can let your imagination run wild and dip, roll or sprinkle the apples with whatever you want. I like dipping mine in dark chocolate and then sprinkling them with crushed nuts, pumpkin seeds, and shredded coconut. This is your tasty treat so have fun with it!
And of course it wouldn’t be my blog post if I didn’t share some of the nutritional benefits! So here you go…
These Easy Raw Caramel Apples are…
Loaded with fiber (from apples & dates)
High in vitamins & minerals (from apples & dates)
Bone strengthening (apple skin contains the flavonoid phlorizin, may help prevent bone loss)
And… so tasty!
A treat that’s high in fiber, yes please! Both apples and dates contain a good amount of fiber making them natures best sugar blockers. Fiber is made up of parts of plant food that your body can’t digest. There are two types of fiber, soluble and insoluble. Soluble fiber, in particular aids in blood sugar regulation, which helps with those blood spikes. But remember moderation is still key to staying healthy!
Now it’s your turn! I’d love to see what you and your family come up with, so tag me on Instagram at #blumenutrition.
